Garden of Praça do Município, in Braga
The Pelicano Fountain is located in the center of Praça do Município in Braga, North of Portugal.
The Mannerist-Joanine style font was designed by the sculptor Marceliano de Araújo. Originally it was located in the gardens of the Paço Arquiepiscopal Bracarense.
Later it was located in Parque da Ponte for several years, until it was moved to its current location during the presidency of Viriato Nunes on November 30, 1967.
The fountain is made up of five bowls arranged in the center by a bowl that is higher than the rest and flanked by another four smaller bowls, which are topped by a sculptural group and inserted into a four-lobed tank, which rests on a circular base forming two steps, these last two elements being built in the 20th century and designed by the municipal architect Cortez Marques.
The symbolism is religious, linked to the Legend of the Pelican. In 2021, it will be classified as an asset of municipal interest.
